How to Fold  T-Shirts for Neat and Tidy Drawers

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a ton of t-shirts! Each day, I wake up and choose from my collection of 10 trusty black tees. A good black t-shirt really pays off in the long run. Then there are the gym shirts, all the kids’ t-shirts, and if you live with someone like Jacob, probably about 20 white ones too!

T-shirts are a popular clothing choice, and it’s easy to accumulate a lot of them. When you have lots of the same style, the best way to store them is often in a drawer. This is because they will all  fold the same, line up neatly, and create a very satisfying, organised look!

When our drawers are organized in an aesthetically pleasing way, the following ‘after value’ occurs:

  • We can find what we’re looking for quickly and easily
  • We’re more motivated to put the laundry away because it’s a more satisfying end result and its easier to put clothes back into a ready set up system
  • It brings us a sense of happiness just by looking at it

Here’s my guide to folding a t-shirt for maximum ‘after value’.

Step 1. Lay the t-shirt flat, art work facing down, this way you’ll be able to see it when the folds finished

Step 2. Fold in both sides. If you want to make the fold finish smaller, fold the sides in more. If you want the fold to finish larger then fold the sides in less. The measurement from one side to the other after this step should match the size of your space. Don’t get your ruler out trust me when I say you’ll be able to do it by eye.

Step 3. Fold the hem of the t-shirt to just underneath the neck line. Leaving this gap will make sure the fold stays neat with no edges falling out.

Step 4. Fold the t-shirt down from the top. The amount of folds you do will depend on the length of the t-shirt and how short you want the fold to be.

Step 5. File fold into your drawer  (This means each t-shirts will sit up straight and in a row). I highly recommend drawer dividers if your drawer is wide enough for more than 1 row.

Step 6. Enjoy the ‘after value’!

Hope this helped, happy folding!!
